Showcase Dec. 5

Hello all,

I just want to touch base with you all about Friday.

I will be in my office at 10 am, and the tables will arrive at that time.

We will start setting up around 10:30, and I could always use some help.

There will be powercords and such for computers. (Also if you need some sound capability, I will be bringing some ipod players and the boom bucket).

You will need to bring:
1. Presentation
2. Flyers or other hand-outs. (If you need copies of anything please email me the file and I will make copies).
3. Computers, sound devices, etc.
4. Fun things (have fun)
5. Your self.

I am attaching the schedule for the showcase. This is a lose schedule, meaning you can come early and stay late. Remember, you may want to look at what the other classes have done during the semester. You will have to have 10 comments completed so you may want to ask your friends, family, and professors to stop by and look at your work.

I will provide the comment cards for each of you. I will also be taking photos and videos of your work and presentations.

Remember, "a student repays a teacher badly if they remain nothing but a pupil." You are all teachers now!

Take care, and let me know if you need any help.

T/Friday For Tuesday

Hello all,

Today we had the last of our knowledge nuggets. You all created a representation of your understanding of _The Shadow of the Wind_. Everyone created their own understanding of the book and the reading. Hopefully we will continue this discussion as we move to Tuesday's discussion. We also talked about the power of reading. Please for discussion on Tuesday, bring a name of the reading that you felt affected you the most or still affects you.

We also reviewed the importance of reflection and planning future actions in regards to our Project Three. In class we created and crafted a reflection on the work that we have completed, and then we crafted a short action plan to forecast what we need to do in the future. We also discussed the importance of thinking about how we will teach the material to others.

For Tuesday....

m/w/f For Friday...

Hello all,

Today we had the last of our knowledge nuggets. You all created a representation of your understanding of _The Shadow of the Wind_. Max created a poem:
The book opened my eyes
For my father this was a pleasant surprise
Nothing about the author was what we knew
so we went to a man who's books were old
he looked at through his monocled eye with an attempt to get me to fold.
His wallet in hand and money on the table but something made me unable.
He glared at my father like horse out of stable.
My good old dad smiled and said i'm sorry it his too bad
At this point the man seemed mad angry with my greed.
but the simple truth was I just wanted to read.
A grin was exchanged and a deal was made.
Tomorrow my ordeal will be paved.

Awesome, Max, awesome.

We also talked about the power of reading. Please for discussion on Friday, bring a name of the reading that you felt affected you the most or still affects you.

I also returned your Project Two drafts. Please come and see me about revising your drafts.

T/Friday For Friday

Hello all,

Today, Professor Fletch (Yeah!!!) led our last discussion of Vogler. Fletch presented a brief overview of the readings: his main points of discussion were centered on the power of words, the power of stories, and the power of texts to explore and to connect humanity. Lucy and Liz B discussed the notion of relating to characters and sharing their experiences through these connections. Aleena mentioned that the individual journey is very important when writing and reading. Liz B and Katlyn furthered the discussion by mentioning the willing and wishing phase.

We then talked about the annotated bibliographies which are due on Tuesday Nov. 25. The bibliographies are 8-11, and you will also want to place a brief review of which fiction readings you enjoyed and which fiction readings you felt where not applicable. Thanks for helping me to locate the most applicable readings.

We talked about interviews, volunteering, and your poster presentation. Your interviews and volunteering logs are due on Tuesday Dec. 2. However, I strongly urge you to complete these exercises prior to that date. On Tuesday Dec 2, we will have a timed in-class writing, and then our Presentations are on Dec. 5.

I also explained that for the remaining three weeks we will have 15 minutes per class period to conduct work on projects, revisions of project one and two polished drafts, or other writing exercises. This is the time to bring your work to class, and to get the changes to work with me and your peers to craft polished drafts and texts.

Hello all,

Today, Professor Rhianna (Yeah!!!) led our last discussion of Vogler. Rhianna presented a brief overview of the readings: her main points of discussion were centered on the power of words, the power of stories, the writer as shaman, and the power of texts to explore and to connect humanity. Zoab and Devin mentioned that words can also do more than harm. Cameron and Christine mentioned the importance of the story and the knowledge presented in the text. Breck mentioned and then showed the powerful story of the autustic basketball player as evidence of the power of humanity through words.

We then talked about the annotated bibliographies which are due on Tuesday Nov. 25. The bibliographies are 8-11, and you will also want to place a brief review of which fiction readings you enjoyed and which fiction readings you felt where not applicable. M/W/F For Weds.

Hello all,

Today, Professor Veronica led our last discussion of Vogler. Veronica presented a brief overview of the readings: her main points of discussion were centered on the power of words, the power of stories, the writer as shaman, and the connection of solitude with writing. Andrew mentioned that words can also do harm, Jessie mentioned that good writing relates to your life, and Jordan mentioned that it was necessary to have some connection with the writer and the audience. Andrew also mentioned that writing was like Frankenstein as in it feeds off the audience's focus and attention, and for a moment or two, the text is alive.

We then talked about the annotated bibliographies which are due on Monday Nov. 24. The bibliographies are 8-11, and you will also want to place a brief review of which fiction readings you enjoyed and which fiction readings you felt where not applicable. Thanks for helping me to locate the most applicable readings.

We talked about interviews, volunteering, and your poster presentation. Your interviews and volunteering logs are due on Monday Dec. 1. T/Friday For Tuesday

Hello all,

For today, we discussed Kingston "White Tigers." We had a short knowledge nugget where we conducted a rhetorical analyses of the text. We then moved to framing the story into not just rhetorical analysis but also to the ways the text references areas of our culture.

We also discussed the storycorps interview that we are completing for the Project three presentation. We discussed the importance of story-telling or of talk-story. We discussed that listening to people speak of their experiences is a great way to 1. augment our understanding of an issue and 2. to think about ways to teach others about the issue. You need to listen to the npr.org (storycorps link) to listen to the unique way that you will be interviewing someone.

For class on Tuesday:

Read-Vogler 293-312 (last Vogler)
For Friday read Zafon selection (emailed)

M/W/F For Friday

Hello all,

Today we had a knowledge nugget on Kingston's _The Woman Warrior_. We wrote on the ethos, pathos, and logos inherent in the story.

Here are sampling of the statements/observations:

Ethos can be seen when she builds an army.
One aspect of pathos was the searing pain felt wile she endured the tattooing of all the transgressions against her village into her back.
Ethos is when I identified with Mulan be coming strong and independent.
The logos is the task that she must complete for her civilization, and she must pretend to be a boy and fight in her father's place.

We also discussed the storycorps interview that we are completing for the Project three presentation. We discussed the importance of story-telling or of talk-story. T/Fr For Friday

Hello all,

Today, Professor Emma (Yeah!!). graciously contributed her viewpoints and guided the class in a discussion about films which relate to ideas in and from Vogler. We discussed Vogler's critique of _Titantic_, _The Lion King_, and _Pulp Fiction_. We had a lot of discussion about Vogler and how the lens which Vogler has provided has created a way for us to look at the world. Emma presented on the various ways that these films and texts are metaphors for life. Liz B, Elenia, Emily C, Roxanne, and Haden all contributed unique perspectives on the retrospective chapter.

We then had a norming session concerning one of my undergrad texts. We settled on a medium grade or average evaluation for the text. (Boy did I not guide my reader)

We also spent some time working on project three.

Hello all,

Today, Professor John C. graciously contributed for a second presentation about Vogler. We discussed Vogler's critique of _Titantic_, _The Lion King_, and _Pulp Fiction_. We had a lot of discussion about Vogler and how the lens which Vogler has provided has created a way for us to look at the world. Breck mentioned that maybe art is just art, that it shouldn't have to connect to another attribute. We then discussed the difference necessary for interpretation and appreciation of art for art's sake and art as cultural artifact.

M/W/F For Weds...

Hello all,

Today in class, we discussed the reminder of the semester and the various activities that will be taking place. Professor Ally discussed the Vogler reading. We discussed the connection of Hamlet to The Lion King. We also applauded ourselves for reading, reacting, and creating our knowledge of the Vogler readings throughout the semester.

We then shifted to evaluating our texts. We participated in a norming session, using on of my old drafts, to come to an agreement of what we believe the scores should be. We discussed the difference in our gut and our assessment, and we decided that we need to work on balancing those two areas to come to a true evaluation of the text.

For class on Weds.

Read-Kingston (Reading will be emailed)

Write-Work on 1 to 2 paragraph rhetorical analyses for project three (we will be discussing these in class on Weds).

T/Friday For Tuesday

Hello all,

Today, we spent some time discussing revising and editing. I handed out a collection of handouts that will not help you with this polished draft, but they will help you other writing projects. Remember, you should always try to read your text and revise your text at varying times and mindsets, as a text is not a performance; instead, a text is the exposition and presentation of the development of your ideas about a topic. Remember, the word essay comes from the French essay--which means "to try."

We also talked about the importance of using different strategies to revise and to edit your texts. Some of the ideas that I implement is having peers and colleagues read and comment on my work, going to the writing center and have a peer tutor read and comment on on your work, reading your work aloud (even recording it) so that you HEAR your work and make sense of it as a listener, and of course, submitting it to your instructor for continued feedback and clarification.

We also spent some time in class working on the four modes analysis. You will need to make sure that you bring the completed rhetorical analysis handout to class on Tuesday for credit. In addition, you will want to make sure that you post the drafts of your one to two paragraph analysis of each of the four on your blog for class on Tuesday.

Hello all,

Jill Bobay of the Service Learning Office came in and visited with us. She provided many opportunities to us for our three-hour service commitment for Project Three: the part of the project where we share our knowledge and our passion. Jill gave three Eckerd contacts-Garden work with Kayla Finney at phinnek@eckerd.edu, ECOs (making sandwiches and such for the homeless) with Mike Collins at collinmj@eckerd.edu, and Awesome Recycling with Joanna Cardao at cardaojm@eckerd.edu. Jill also encouraged you to visit her in the office for more information. Her emails is bobayjm@gmail.com Here are a couple of the pages of contacts, and I will email the other contacts to you. Remember, you will want to start working on this section of the project now. The log is located on engrade, and I will also email it all to you.

We also discussed the project two draft. I handed out a packet of revising and editing materials, which should help you not only in the revision and editing of the project 2 draft but also in all your academic writing. The draft is due on Monday Nov. 10, and I strongly encourage you to submit another draft to me for comments. Remember, the more times you revise a draft the more refined and tailored that draft becomes. You have until Sunday at 5 pm to submit a draft for review. Remember to also use the writing center.

We also worked on completing on rhetorical analyses of the four presentations. The one to two paragraph rhetorical explorations are due on Monday. You need to make sure that you post them on your blog. You will receive a grade and feedback for revision on these texts. You need to complete the handout for the modes. You will share this document with me for credit.

For Friday.

T/Friday For Friday

Hello all,

Today, we had a busy class. First, Jill Boby of the Service Learning Office came in and visited with us.

During the discussion about Vogler, Prof. Roxanne got everyone involved. We had quite a discussion about the resurrection and elixer. The conversation ended with a lovely bit of banter about the differences between American and European stories (Americans like happy endings and Europeans like questions and explorations).

We also discussed the project 3 four modes rhetorical analysis. We discussed why we are locating four presentations (a book, a song, a film, and a piece of art) to teach others about our topic. We also looked the handout which you will need to bring to class on Friday for in-class work. We did an example analysis on the American Apparel ad.

We then shifted to doing peer review on our project two revised drafts. I gave a handout to you all for peer review. (FYI-F/T focus and thesis, PoA-progression of argument, DofI-Development of Ideas, EofT-evolution of thought, IoR-Illustration of research, and ADS-academic discourse style.) Please make sure that you complete your peer reviews by Friday. You may also want to use the peer review exercise on your personal text, as it is the assessment tool that we will be using to evaluate ourselves and our peer's texts. Remember, you don't have to resubmit your draft to me for a second revision, BUT I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO SO. Remember, sharing your ideas with others helps to make them stronger.

For class on Friday-

Read-No fiction readings (just work on revision of project two and posting of four modes for project three)

Write-revision and peer review notes

Do-Peer review
Four modes posted on blog
Select and inquire about volunteer
Revise and resubmit draft (optional)---Polished draft is due on Nov. 11.

Hello all,

In addition, Brianna, Christine, John, Cameron, Chris G, Chris A., Breck Kelley, Silke Gapsis, Kayla, Devin, Rhianna, and Zoah received a Get out of Jail free card (good for one annotated bibliography or extra credit opportunity).

During the discussion about Vogler, Prof. Breck used socratic questioning to get everyone involved. I discovered that a lot of you really like cartoons. Devin mentioned the elections as the resurrection and the elixer, and I would love to discuss this more on Thursday after the election. I think it was a really good observations.

We also discussed the project 3 four modes rhetorical analysis. We discussed why we are locating four presentations (a book, a song, a film, and a piece of art) to teach others about our topic. M/W/F For Weds...

Hello all,

Today in class, Professor Javi led our discussion of Vogler's resurrection and elixer. Professor Javi discussed the insight necessary learning from the resurrection and the need to learn from the journey. Brillianna, Max, and Andrew discussed the need to learn lessons and learn from your experiences. Jessi mentioned that she did not think that films that focused on the resurrection where the most engaging.

I connected the reading and the various stages to the writing journey, and Andrew came up with an awesome metaphor for me, a switchboard operator.

We also discussed our scholarly duty to teach others through the analysis of texts which can inform others about our topic from project two. I gave a handout, which I will be emailing to you all, to help you with understanding the work. You need to make sure that you have posted your four modes on your blog, and that you have started working through the analysis handout. This step of the project is due in completion on Monday Nov. 10.

We conducted an analysis of the song "You are my sunshine." We worked through the analysis handout.

T/Fr For Friday

Hello all,

Today in class, Professor Greg talked about the reward and the road back. Lucy and Raj discussed how the reward often comes later in the journey then we, as the reader and/or viewer, would like.. We then shifted to discussing the road back, which is the stage in the journey when we initiate the journey back to ordinary world. We connected the Vogler reading to the Bell Jar, and we discussed the ability of the reader, like the hero to accept that we don't always get to go home.

For class on Tuesday, we need to focus on completing our project two draft. If you have not posted your draft yet, you need to do that asap. You need to make your revisions on your draft by Tuesday, to conduct a peer review session.

We discussed the importance of taking our knowledge and giving it back to our communities. In fact, as I mentioned what good is knowledge if you only produce a product. Remember, as I have mentioned many times, one repays a teacher badly if one remains nothing but a pupil. You need to go and to present your ideas to your community, for it is only through sharing, teaching, and telling that we, too, are able to engage our knowledge and to become scholars.

On Tues. we will have a visit from Jill Bobay to discuss opportunities to volunteer. Moreover, we also discussed the various methods that we use to learn and to teach about issues and ideas. So, we will be using fiction pieces, to teach others about aspects of our research during our ultimate presentation.

T/TR For Thursday...

Hello all,

Today in class, we talked about the reward and the road back. We discussed how the reward often comes later in the journey then we, as the reader and/or viewer, would like. In addition, we then went into how the reward is the a-ha moment which occurs when the hero experiences an epiphany which gives him or her a type of knowledge based on the experiences which he or she lived during the journey. We then shifted to discussing the road back, which is the stage in the journey when we initiate the journey back to ordinary world. We talked a lot about the setbacks which occur in our lives, that ultimately, as Chris O observed, put our knowledge/reward to the test.

For class on Tuesday, we need to focus on completing our project two draft. If you have not posted your draft yet, you need to do that asap. You need to make your revisions on your draft by Tuesday, to conduct a peer review session.

For Friday, you need to revise your project two draft, and bring it to class for peer review. You will then revised the text using your peer feedback. You may than submit your draft for a second instructor revision; however, you are not required to do this, but you are strongly encouraged to submit your draft again. The polished draft is due on Nov. 7 (Friday).

In class today, we discussed the Bell Jar. Andrew had a vitrolic observation, that he supported well. We discussed the depressive quality of the work, which lead us to a discussion about mental health and the mental health complex. We discussed the history of mental health in the United States. This discussion lead us to think about performing as socitey expects us to, which lead us to beauty myths, sluts, and man-whores. Whew!! What an oddly amazing discussion.

T/F For Friday-No Class on Tuesday for Fall Break

Hello all,

Today, we focused on communicating ideas and moved from paragraph level concerns to sentence level concerns. Our "knowledge nugget" for Kerouac focused on crafting one good paragraph, and then we moved to locating one good sentence. We then discussed the importance of focusing on the relationship between the text, paragraph, and sentence. Remember, the text explores the topic, the paragraph explores aspects of the text's exploration of the topic, and the sentence explores aspects of the paragraph's exploration of the text's exploration of the topic. Here is a re-captured exploration of this exercise.

Also, we created and established our rubric for Project Two. Here is the overall rubric which we will be using.

In addition, we also established our Plagiarism Contract. Thanks to Class for drafting it in class.

We didn't really have a lot of time to watch the film _Reefer Madness_, so please take some time over break to watch and reflect on the link. It is good fun.

For Friday (No Class on Tuesday--Fall Break)

Hello all,

Sorry for the delay in posting and emailing. Professor Kat had a slight issue with her PC. However, I am now online and working (thanks to a new MAC).

In class on Friday, we had a candid conversation about writing and communication. We created a plagiarism policy and we all signed it. Remember there are tons of resources under the blog (being part of the academic discourse community) for you to use to keep your self honest.

We also discussed the importance of crafting a strong understanding of writing for the academic community.

I really appreciate your candor.

Remember no class on Monday for fall break.

I am missing a ton of drafts on google.docs. Please post these asap. If I don't have them posted by Sunday at 5 pm, I will have to deduct points from your score.

For Weds.

M/W/F For Weds.

Hello all,

Today in class, we conducted a group "writing" knowledge nugget about Kerouac and Vogler. Six Groups wrote six paragraphs, and here is a condensed version of what the six paragraphs would look like as an essay/paragraph.

In Kerouac's _On The Road_, the ordinary world is Gregoria. In the book, _On The Road, again there is a slight call to adventure. Sal recieves the call to adventure when he meets up with Dean in Denver. Along with this came the refusal of the call when he suggest they should go back. We think Dean was Sal's mentor who became a shadow. One evident archetype in this section was Tests, allies, and enemies as well as the element of an ordeal. These tests lead to Mexico City and culimanted in the ordeal with Sal getting sick with dysentry while Dean receives urgent news he must return to the united states immediately to deal with his wive(s). Therefore, several aspects of Vogler's journey are present in Kerouac's _On The Road_.

We then transitioned to creating and establishing the rubric for Project Two. Yes, it is helpful to evaluate your and your peer's work, and yes, it is hard.

Here are some copies of our discussion which will become our rubric.

For Friday:

Read: Nothing (but if you want to watch the _Reefer Madness_ Video as we will be discussing it on Friday.

Write: Work on your draft for project two

Do: Compile your annotated bibliographies in hard-copy for the midterm review.

T/Fr For Friday

ello all,

Today, Professor Raj guided us through the innermost cave and the ordeal in Vogler. Professor Raj asked the big question "why are we all scared of death?" Many people participated in answering this question. Some great observations were made:

Liz B-These section really relate to life and that we must grow through out "mini-deaths"
Fletch- Roller Coasters and cheating Death (humans understand life the best when experienced in the life or death moment).
Greg-Panic when a hero panics. The effect of emotion on all other characters and the audience.
Aleena-Death is scary and negative, and we avoid this.
Haden-Carpe Diem--We need to find a dragon?
Elena-The importance of Metaphor in seeing the journey.

I brought up some connections with our writing process, and how we, currently, our in the innermost cave preparing for the ordeal of drafting. Excellent job class.

We then shifted to discussing the moving from the "cave" of outlining to the "ordeal" of writing our first "draft." We had five of our peers read our outlines and list our strengths and weaknesses as we move to writing. The first draft is not due until Friday, but it would be wise to start drafting now.

For Class on Friday.

Read-Kerouac Chapters 6-7

Write-1. Post an answer to a peer's question on their blog
2. Post an overview of your strengths and weaknesses from the Peer Review Session on your blog

For 10/19 and 10/20

Hello all,

It was great getting the opportunity to discuss your research and areas of inquiry for your project twos during our meetings. I think that everyone that I visited with is on the right track as far as the project goes.

For class next week, I have a few reminders.

1. Thanks to the feedback which I have received through the mid-term survey (you can still access it at Click Here to take survey) I have realized that we need to slow the pace a bit, and to have a re-focusing. This manifested itself in our conferences, and some plans I have for the future.

2. Please make sure you post your Vogler annotation on your blog for the next class. Also, as a reminder, you need to prepare your annotations for the Mid-Term Annotated Bibliography review where you submit all of your Vogler annotations to this point for evaluation.

3. Complete the Thesis/focus exploration (which most of you accomplished during our meeting). Then, you will need to complete the pre-drafting/writing/outline exercise that we discussed. Bring this with you to class. If you want to complete it electronically, you can download it on engrade, and I will also email it to you all.

4. Have fun with your research. Go to the library. Hang out. Wander the stacks. Research is where you get to "hang out" with your academic buddies, so don't look at it as a chore, look at it as an opportunity.

Take care, and see you soon,

Kat

Today in class, we spoke about establishing our focus statement and outlining/drafting our text. I gave out a "substantial" handout, which I am also attaching to this email (the tpa is the focus document and the outline is the outline). We spoke about the importance of establishing a lens for our reader, and we discussed the importance of arranging our texts in a logical yet engaging manner.

In addition, we went to the Library for more "research fun." Helene Gold really helped us to get our perspective on key word searches and databases. Please make sure that you post your i-search on google.docs and bring it to our meetings.

T/Fr For Friday

Hello all,

Today in class, we discussed the feedback that you provided to me about the course work and expectations. I urge you to all complete the mid-term evaluation of the course. (Click Here to take survey

The survey really helps me to see what you think of the work we are doing. As a result of some of your feedback, I have decided to take a step back from the readings. Thus, this week we are going to have one-on-one conferences on Weds., Thursday, or Friday. Please sign up at ecandp2008fall.blogspot.com for your appointment. During this appointment, you need to bring your i-search text. At the meetings, we will be discussing the inquiry, research, and outlining.

In class, we discussed Vogler's Crossing of the First Threshold and Tests, allies, and enemies. Professor Liz led our discussion. Prof. Liz really focused on the relationships between the hero and the allies and enemies. Fletch mentioned that the rival gives the hero a drive to succeed, and Haden built on this idea by showing that there are always comparisons between the ally, enemy, and hero. Elenia mentioned the idea of moral stances and the need for balance in the story which Emma connected to Batman and the various allies, tests, and enemies encountered in the story. Aleena O mentioned the importance of helping others out which was also tied with the necessity of comic relief.

We also reviewed the I-Search. You only need to conduct one of the three interviews. The I-search will need to be posted on google docs. by Friday and brought to our conference, so happy working.

However, we did get the chance to go to the Library. YEAH!!! Remember to keep in touch with Helene and her team. You are all scholars now. Helene really helped us to get an understanding of the importance of specificity in our searching and researching. Remember, the Library is a great place to get "your information on."

For Friday: (Or for Weds, Thurs, or Friday) Conference

Read: N/A

Do: Complete your I-search and post on google.docs. Bring this to our meeting.
Answer one of your peer's questions on their blog

Write: Work on I-search and research/interviews.

For Tuesday:

Read: Vogler 143-173

Do: Complete an annotation and post on your blog

Write: Complete outline for Project two (Posted on engrade on 10/14) (bring to class and post on google.docs.)

For those of you interested in "seeing me work," I will be presenting at the FCEA (Florida College English Association) Conference in Tampa on Thursday and Friday from 9-10:15 am in Ybor.

On Thursday, I am presenting on my pedagogy at Eckerd, and on Friday, I am presenting on Hemingway, Florida and rhetoric. Cool times with crazy scholars are bound to happen. Send me an email, and I will be happy to get you directions.

See you at our meeting on Weds., Thurs, or Friday.

Take care,

In class, we discussed Vogler's Crossing of the First Threshold and Tests, allies, and enemies. Professor John C led our discussion. John had some great observations, and Cindy B had a great observation about how these stages are really extensions of the mentor's training. Kayla, Zoah, Breck, Devin, and Christine kept the "ball" rolling as we shifted to discussing a hero's motivation and faith. Great discussion.

We ended the day by "seeing" how rhetorical arrangement really "works." Using large beachballs, we went through the various stages of academic arrangement. We talked about how important telling your readers what you think and showing your readers why to believe you is in academic communication. I really liked the "pot-ball." As we move to outlining/prewriting our drafts, you will want to "be the ball" when concerning yourselves with issues of structure. Remember papers are inquiries, paragraphs are inquiries, and sentences are inquiries....Just keep asking the right questions.

M/W/F For Friday

Hello all,

Today in class, Professor Lincoln led our discussion about Vogler's crossing the first threshold and the tests, allies, and enemies. Andrew, Emily, Jessie, and Brooke contributed greatly to the discussion. I really like the idea that Javi had where she questioned whether any journey could lack allies. I am still thinking about this one.

We also discussed the amount of work you all have been doing, and thanks to some feedback which I have received through the mid-term survey (you can still access it at Click Here to take survey) I have realized that we need to slow the pace a bit, and to have a re-focusing. So, on Weds., Thurs., and Friday, we will be meeting to touch base on your project work.

We ended the day by "seeing" how rhetorical arrangement really "works." Using large baseballs, we went through the various stages of academic arrangement. We talked about how important telling your readers what you think and showing your readers why to believe you is in academic communication. I really liked the "cheese-ball." As we move to outlining/prewriting our drafts, you will want to "be the ball" when concerning yourselves with issues of structure. Remember papers are inquiries, paragraphs are inquiries, and sentences are inquiries....Just keep asking the right questions.

We also reviewed the I-Search. You only need to conduct one of the three interviews. The I-search will need to be posted on google docs. by Friday, so happy working. However, we are getting the chance to go to the Library on Weds. YEAH!!! (Have some questions for the Librarians).

T/Fr For Tuesday...

Hello all,

To begin, we discussed the importance of locating ourselves in our world. We discussed metaphor and the importance of the "cockroach." In many ways we linked the ideas to Gregor and ultimately to ourselves. We worked hard on discussing and observing the notion of being "blind" to acceptance of the cockroaches in our existences. I really liked that we embraced these ideas as scholars. Lucy had a really profound observation about the United States and acceptance. I think that the contributions during this discussion were rich and ripe areas for further exploration.

Some of these were:
Raj-The Cockroach Cometh: The Way that People Avoid Looking at Others
Leslie-Cockroach Soap for the Soul: Family Units as Cockroaches

We watched a short snippet about integration in the 1950s. We discussed which of the television interviews was more "valid." Roxanne, Liz and Emma made a great observation that the woman was more of an authority because of her fear.

In addition, we discussed conducting research and putting ourselves in conversation with academic friends. Remember to keep a works cited and a bibliography or works consulted page/list. The project requires four sources (three articles and one book). You can use wikipedia to help, but don't stop there...keep asking the questions. In addition, remember to ask your "academic buddies" i.e. the research that you locate to help you i.e. look at the sources that they cited and used.

We watched a short overview of "how to know if a source rocks." Remember, there are scholarly, professional, and popular forms of articles and information. Remember, since you are a scholar, you will want to 'hang out' with other scholars, so watch the video again for clarity (under ecandp2008fall.blogspot.com in "being part of the academic discourse community").

In addition, we discussed the importance of critical thinking and reading. We went through Bloom's taxonomy, and we created an understanding of "how to read." Emily rocked Bloom's.

M/W/F For Friday

Hello all,

First, thanks so much for an awesome class. I really felt like we "created some knowledge." The connections you all made among the Vogler stages, Kafka reading, and our culture were amazing. I liked that you could see the blindness that we have sometimes when we don't want to look at something outside our acceptance level.

Some powerful observations that could be developed into scholarly inquiries are:
Andrew-Global Warming as the Giant Cockroach in the Room: A study of Human Inability to "see" effects on the world
Brooke-The Two Cockroaches of the Apocalypse: Genocide and the Holocaust Issues
Lincoln-The Cockroach that Roared: Aparthaid as Vocal Challenge
Emily-Cockroaches and Research: A Study of Why College Students are Blind to Research and Writing
Max-Uncle Cockroach Wants You: Racism, Genderism, and Sexism as the Three Pillars of American Ignorance
Kristy-Can you spare a dime: The Homeless as Cockroach

I feel like we have an entire conference of cockroachery here....Excellent work, Scholars.

We also discussed the 1950s and integration of schools. We watched two interviews from students during this time. We discussed the validity of their information as sources for research. This brought us to examining why do we do research. As mentioned before, research is just "talking with our scholarly buddies." So get into the conversation.

For Monday...

Read-Vogler (127-141) for monday

Chapter 6-7 of _On The Road_ for Weds.

Write-Annotation for Vogler on Blog
(Mid-term review will be due on 10/24)

Do-Research (Complete 3 articles and 1 book search, and complete the sections on the I-Search)

Remember, you are all SCHOLARS....so embrace the research.

Take care,

Kat

T/TR For Thursday

Hello all,

To begin, we discussed the importance of locating ourselves in our world. We discussed metaphor and the importance of the "cockroach." In many ways we linked the ideas to Gregor and ultimately to ourselves. Devin and Zoah had some rocking ideas about the relation of ideas throughout time and history (especially American History) which relate to "cockroachery." Kayla made a powerful observation about how the cockroach represents the "stranger."

We watched a short snippet about integration in the 1950s. We discussed which of the television interviews was more "valid." John C. had a great observation that the woman was more of an authority while the boy only offered his opinion.

In addition, we discussed conducting research and putting ourselves in conversation with academic friends. Remember to keep a works cited and a bibliography or works consulted page/list. The project requires four sources (three articles and one book). You can use wikipedia to help, but don't stop there...keep asking the questions. Hello all,

To begin, we discussed the importance of locating ourselves in our world. We discussed metaphor and the importance of the "cockroach." In many ways we linked the ideas to Gregor and ultimately to ourselves. Andrew and Brooke had some fantastic observations, and hopefully, some research ideas are starting to percolate.

T/Fr For Friday

Hello all,

Today, Professor Elena led the class discussion on refusals and mentors. Leslie and Lisa had a nice exchange about how the mentor could be both child-like and experience. Haden and Elenia both observed that they faced refusals of the call when they didn't want to go to class. (Feel better Elenia). In addition, Haden encouraged us to embrace our location in the journey, and we shared our stages. Excellent observations and discussions.

We discussed how as a writer we sometimes refuse the call, and we procrastinate, but that with the aid of mentors (teachers, peers, and others), we ultimately start our journey to creating great inquiry and discourse.

We then spent some time "norming." We looked at three samples, and we went through our gut reaction, the class rubric reaction, and then the overall reaction. Now, you should be prepared to turn your lens to your text and to your peer's text.

We then moved onto asking the important questions about our explorations and inquiry for Project Two. We really moved into exploration. Remember at this point, you are asking questions, not looking to answer questions. You have to conduct research, and you need to see what others who are interested in the topic are discussing and finding out. Remember, Socrates said "true intelligence is admitting that you know nothing." Right now, we know "nothing." We must find out our questions first. That means that you will need to begin researching using the databases. I only am requiring four sources (three articles and one book). You can use wikipedia to help, but don't stop there...keep asking the questions. In addition, remember to ask your "academic buddies" i.e. the research that you locate to help you i.e. look at the sources that they cited and used.

T/TR For Thursday

Hello all,

Welcome Back!! Today, Professor Zoah led the class discussion on refusals and mentors. John C and Cameron had a nice exchange about how the mentor can "push" the hero to work harder. Christine and Chris G observed the importance of a mentor i.e. _The Karate Kid_. Kayla and Devin discussed the importance of the multiple mentor.
